OBSERVATIONS ON INFEASIBILITY DETECTORS FOR CLASSIFYING CONIC CONVEX PROGRAMS

Abstract

New insights are presented from a convex duality classification theory of over 25 years ago for recent computational complexity results developed for recognizing some of the asymptotic duality states that prevail for an arbitrary convex programming pair.     

Anti‐inflammatory activities and glycerophospholipids metabolism in KLA‐stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophage cells by diarylheptanoids from the rhizomes of Alpinia officinarum

Alpinia officinarum is used for its anti‐inflammatory activity historically in China. Diarylheptanoids isolated from A. officinarum play important biological roles in the prevention and treatment of inflammatory disorders. Seven diarylheptanoids (1–7) were isolated from A. officinarum. The cell viabilities and anti‐inflammatory activities of diarylheptanoids were evaluated by MTT assay and tumor necrosis factor‐α production in Kdo2‐lipid A‐stimulated RAW 264.7 cells in vitro. The relationships between their anti‐inflammatories and structure‐activities are discussed. The results indicated that compounds 1 and 3–7 had significant anti‐inflammatory activities. The relationships between inflammation and phospholipids metabolism were elucidated by multivariate data analysis. Twenty‐two potential biomarkers were identified in inflammatory group vs. blank group, and 11 potential biomarkers were identified for inflammatory group vs. drug‐treatment groups. Ten common phospholipids were characterized. On the basis of a previous study in our laboratory, we found that phosphatidylethanolamine (18:0/18:1) might be the important glycerophospholipid biomarker in inflammation. In this study, we firstly combined anti‐inflammatory activities and glycerophospholipids changes of traditional Chinese medicine. This work suggests that the anti‐inflammatory activities of diarylheptanoids might be significantly related to glycerophospholipids and could provide a useful database for investigating the anti‐inflammatory effects of traditional Chinese medicine.     

Syntheses,structures, and properties of Ni(II) complexes with 5,5′-bis(4-halogenphenyl)diazo-dipyrromethane

Ni(II) complexes with 5,5′-bis(4-halogenphenyl)diazo-dipyrromethane have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. All the complexes have similar crystal structures in which Ni(II) is square-planar by coordinating to two pyrrole and two azo nitrogen atoms. The azo-pyrroles of the ligands can be converted to the hydrazone tautomer after complexing nickel. Moreover, the C–H?···?Ni interaction played an important role in directing self-assembly of the complexes. The UV-Vis spectra of the complexes showed great difference with the metal complexes of pyrrol-2-imine.     

Indications of bulk property changes from surface ion implantation

In the majority of cases, the effects of ion implantation are confined close to the implant zone but, potentially, the resultant distortions and chemical modifications could catalyse relaxations extending into the bulk substrate. Such possibilities are rarely considered but the present data suggest that high dose ion implantation of ZnO has induced bulk changes. Surface implants with Cu and Tb strongly modified the low temperature bulk thermoluminescence properties generated by X-ray irradiation. Suggestions are proposed for the possible mechanisms for bulk relaxations and structural characteristics, which may indicate where such instability may occur in other lattice structures.     

Protective activity of an anthocyanin-rich extract from bilberries and blackcurrants on acute acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in rats

Acetaminophen (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol, APAP) overdosage can produce fatal centrilobular hepatic necrosis in humans. The present study attempted to investigate the protective effect of an anthocyanin-rich extract from bilberries and blackcurrants (AE) against APAP-induced acute hepatic damage in rats. Treatment with AE normalised blood activities of glutamate oxaloacetate and glutamate pyruvate transaminase and prevented APAP-induced plasmatic and tissutal alterations in biomarkers of oxidative stress, probably due to various bioproperties of the components of the extract.     

Quantitative analysis of multiple urinary biomarkers of carcinoid tumors through gold-nanoparticle-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry

A simple technique for quantitative analysis of four urinary biomarkers, tryptophan (TRP), 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) of carcinoid tumors is developed using gold nanoparticles as the assisted matrix in surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SALDI–TOF MS). The optimal SALDI conditions for the efficient ionization of those biomarkers are systematically explored by the adjustments of the concentrations of gold nanoparticles and internal standards. The mass spectra with strong signals and minimal background noise are obtained using 1-naphthaleneacetamide (NAD) as the internal standard. The calibration curves of the biomarker concentrations are determined using SALDI–TOF MS and the high linearity is obtained in all samples. For future clinical testing, multiplexed detection of those biomarkers in the urine samples of healthy males is performed. The successful quantitative detections of TRP, 5-HTP, 5-HT and 5-HIAA indicate that our technique provided great potentials to be developed a simple and rapid platform for the tumor biomarker detections.

Analysis of receptor-ligand binding by photoaffinity cross-linking

Photoaffinity cross-linking is a fast developing technology for biomolecular interactions,including receptor-ligand binding.The chemical mechanisms of the most commonly used photoactivatable probes and their respective photochemistry are summarized.This review focuses on the expanding utilities of this technology as a result of recent advances in the(i)identification of receptor contact sites,(ii)monitoring ligand-induced receptor conformational changes,(iii)identification of global binding surfaces,(iv)binding mode analysis using bifunctional photo-probes,(v)application of biosynthetic photo-probes,and(vi)examples of novel target discovery using this technology.Limitations and future potential of this approach are also discussed.
